Hidden within Marseille’s 8th arrondissement, Traverse Prat often goes unnoticed. But this seemingly unassuming street holds a unique story. Traverse Prat was once a narrow, one-way street. It was difficult and dangerous for pedestrians due to insufficient sidewalks. Children and families frequently used this road to reach the local daycare and schools. The Mairie du 6&8 prioritized enhancing pedestrian safety by upgrading the sidewalks. A study was commissioned to develop an improvement project between Avenue du Corail and Avenue de Montredon. In July 2024, the Mairie du 6&8 held a meeting with residents. They presented the project and gathered feedback. A consensus emerged regarding the urgency of work on the section near the daycare. The Métropole Aix Marseille Provence was requested to take action. The goal was to improve pedestrian safety around the daycare. This included widening sidewalks, creating a central island to prevent double parking, installing 30 km/h speed limit signs, and adding speed bumps. Future phases of the project will include further consultation with residents. The estimated duration of the initial work was one month. During construction, alternating traffic flow was implemented over a 50-meter stretch near number 82. This allowed for a 3-meter wide lane. A safe pedestrian crossing was also created on the construction side. The traffic direction in front of the daycare was modified with stop and one-way signs. These improvements aimed to enhance safety, reduce excessive speed, and make pedestrian areas more accessible. They also maintained a consistent traffic flow during the works. Traverse Prat, now safer and more accessible, continues to serve the community. It stands as a testament to the collaboration between residents and local authorities.
