Could the walls of Mushola Al Barkah whisper tales from centuries past? This isn’t just a place of prayer. It is a living testament to Jakarta’s rich religious history.

Welcome to Mushola Al Barkah. It is a sanctuary with a story stretching back over two centuries.

Established in 1818 by Guru Sinin, Mushola Al Barkah stands as one of the oldest mosques in the Kemang Bangka area of South Jakarta. Guru Sinin, believed to be a wali or saint from Banten, left a lasting legacy. The mosque’s origins are humble. It started with simple materials like rumbia leaves and coconut wood. Over time, the community expanded and improved it. This reflects their unwavering devotion.

Imagine this: early worshippers gathering within these walls. They sought solace and guidance. Guru Sinin’s presence was a beacon. People sought his blessings and wisdom. Even after his death in 1920, his tomb became a place of pilgrimage.

The mosque’s construction wasn’t easy. In the beginning, the land was marshy. Building required complex negotiations. Approval from Dutch colonial authorities was needed.

H. Ukib, a third-generation caretaker, shared unique stories. He spoke of a time when he became a follower in prayer led by his grandfather, Guru Sinin, who had already passed away. Such experiences highlight the mosque’s spiritual significance.

Over the years, Mushola Al Barkah underwent several renovations. In 1932, wooden planks replaced the original materials. Later, in 1985, ceramic tiles and a more modern roof were added.

A unique feature is the presence of old tombs behind the building. Here lies Guru Sinin. Also buried here are K.H. Ridi, Guru Sinin’s son-in-law, and K.H. Naisin. These graves are a reminder of the mosque’s deep roots and the people who shaped its history.

Even today, visitors come seeking blessings at Guru Sinin’s tomb. People continue this tradition. It shows the enduring respect for the founder.

Mushola Al Barkah has evolved. It reflects the changing times, while remaining true to its spiritual essence. It is more than just a building. It is a repository of memories and a symbol of faith. The mosque stands as a beacon of hope and a link to Jakarta’s past. Its story continues to unfold with each prayer and each passing day.
