How much do you know about the history of Chicago? Unity Lutheran Church is a hidden gem in the heart of this city. It stands proudly on Magnolia Avenue and has a colorful timeline. Today, you see the church in its current form built in 1917. But, it was not the first one. Unity’s journey began much earlier, in 1905, with a storefront location on Argyle Street. There, a group of 43 ambitious individuals had a dream: to build a new church for the Edgewater community. They gathered funding and in 1906 constructed a small chapel, near the one you see today. This time, the site was at the corner of Balmoral and Magnolia. Years passed, and the church family grew. The need for a larger space became unavoidable. And so, in 1917, the church you see today was built, reflecting their dedication to building a community, not just a building.
The story doesn’t end there. This church is steeped in history. In 1924, Unity became the location where two Lutheran organizations, the General Council of the Lutheran Church and the United Synod in the South, merged. This historical event resulted in the creation of the United Lutheran Church of America. Today, it’s a modern church with an incredibly rich past, reflecting the spirit of those who came before and serving the needs of today’s Chicago.
