Imagine the scene on September 5 1842. A dispensation was signed. This allowed early Masons to hold their first meeting. The Australian Social Lodge No 260 in Sydney made this possible. Their first official meeting was February 9 1843. Sir Frederick Whitaker presided. Irish Freemasonry in New Zealand had begun.
Ara Lodge’s early members were remarkable. William Mason New Zealand’s first architect was a member. He designed Auckland’s original civic buildings. Charles Heaphy a prominent artist and the first New Zealander to receive a Victoria Cross was also a member. Sir Frederick Whitaker a lawyer land speculator and Premier of New Zealand joined their ranks. William Wilson founder of the New Zealand Herald was a member. Dr Robert Kidd the first Headmaster of Auckland Grammar School and Registrar of Auckland University College also belonged to this lodge.
The Lodge thrived. It built lodge rooms in Princess Street Central Auckland. These were next to the Grand Hotel. Those buildings are gone. However their original facades remain. They are the proud entrance to the new building behind. In 1927 a new lodge was constructed on Airedale Street. Ara Lodge still holds its meetings there.
Ara Lodge isn’t just about history. It’s actively involved in the community. They offer the Ara Art Awards. This provides scholarships to year 13 students studying fine arts.
