“November Lima Xray Hotel, do you read?” crackled a voice over the radio. This isn’t a scene from a modern maritime drama. We’re standing before USCGC Tiburon, once known by that international call sign. The USCGC Tiburon isn’t just a ship. It’s a time capsule, a survivor, a witness to history. Built in Brooklyn, New York, in early 1942, the USCGC Tiburon began its life patrolling the East Coast for enemy submarines. It’s hard to imagine this vessel, now resting peacefully, once prowled the Atlantic, a silent guardian against the lurking threat beneath the waves. But its true test was yet to come. In 1944, USCGC Tiburon, then designated USCG-11, was loaded onto a Liberty ship, a precarious journey across the Atlantic to Poole, England. There, it was transformed into a rescue boat, joining Rescue Flotilla One, the “Matchbox Fleet,” so-called because of their wooden hulls and volatile gasoline tanks. Imagine the tension, the fear, the anticipation as USCGC Tiburon, along with 59 other 83-foot cutters, prepared for D-Day. On June 6, 1944, amidst the chaos and carnage of the Normandy landings, USCGC Tiburon braved enemy fire and churning seas, rescuing over 40 servicemen from the frigid waters off Omaha Beach. It remained on station until August 1945, a beacon of hope in the face of unimaginable devastation. The USCGC Tiburon’s story didn’t end with the war. It continued its service in Santa Barbara, California, as a harbor patrol and anti-submarine vessel until 1962. Sold to a private owner in 1963, its remarkable history remained hidden for decades, its wartime heroism fading into obscurity. Rediscovered in 2001 during repairs, USCGC Tiburon’s past was brought to light, its significance finally recognized. This vessel before us is more than just wood and steel. It’s a testament to the bravery and resilience of those who served aboard her, a symbol of hope amidst the horrors of war. It stands as a reminder of the sacrifices made, the lives saved, and the enduring spirit of those who faced the storm and emerged victorious.
