Tucked away in Lyon, Impasse des Platanes is more than just a dead end. It’s a small, private street off Rue Docteur Bonhomme, nestled between buildings numbered 30 and 34. A barrier prevents cars from entering, preserving the tranquility for residents of Impasse des Platanes. Imagine standing at its entrance. Two modern, five-story residences frame the view. The northern building boasts balconies, adding depth to its façade. A second residence, set back on the south side, creates a small, intimate square. Impasse des Platanes doesn’t end abruptly. Three individual houses occupy the far end, their gardens overlooking Place Courtois. A curve to the north reveals a large courtyard. This space serves as the garage area for the surrounding buildings. It also offers a glimpse at the back of Cours Albert Thomas and its prominent stair tower. Impasse des Platanes gets its name from the plane trees, once a defining feature of the area. Although only two remain in the impasse itself, plane trees are common throughout Lyon. However, due to disease, the city has been gradually replacing them with other species. As of 2022, these two plane trees still graced Impasse des Platanes, unlike those in Place Courtois, which were recently replaced with maples. The name “Impasse des Platanes” is a nod to the former Chemin des Platanes, now known as Rue Bonhomme. The Impasse des Platanes’s history is intertwined with the three houses at its end. These houses predate the impasse, originally preventing it from opening onto Place Ambroise Courtois. The current character of Impasse des Platanes is largely shaped by the buildings along Rue Bonhomme. The ones on the north corner, for example, date back to 2004.
