Here stands Athletic Field Park a testament to community and recreation. Established by the Irving Park District, Athletic Field Park got its name from its purpose. The park provides recreational facilities for everyone.
In 1923, the district started acquiring land. It was a tree-lined neighborhood with apartments, bungalows, and homes. Clarence Hatzfeld designed three structures for Athletic Field Park. He was the architect of Villa District residences and north- and northwest-side park fieldhouses.
Constructed in 1926, these buildings included a Spanish Revival-style fieldhouse. There was also a smaller locker and game room plus a children’s playground shelter. The park spanned three and a half acres. It featured an athletic field with grandstands and a junior baseball field. Separate playgrounds for boys and girls were available. Visitors enjoyed a wading pool, a sandbox, horseshoe courts, and tennis courts. Ironically, in 1930, the commissioners decided the junior baseball field wasn’t needed. The area became additional tennis courts.
Athletic Field Park joined the Chicago Park District in 1934. This consolidation occurred during the Great Depression. It combined the city’s 22 independent park agencies.
In the early 1960s, the park district transformed the locker and game room. It became a ceramics studio. Further improvements to the ceramics building were made in 1969. Additional kilns were installed. Today, ceramics classes are among Athletic Field Park’s most popular programs.
Now, Athletic Field Park totals 4.30 acres. It is located in the Irving Park community near Addison and Drake. The park includes an ADA-accessible playground with a soft surface. A spray feature offers refreshment. You can find outdoor basketball and tennis courts. There are also ball fields. The park boasts a field house and a ceramics building.
Athletic Field Park is filled with activities. These range from cultural events to sports programs and early childhood classes. It is a year-round destination. The ceramics classes remain one of Athletic Field Park’s most popular offerings. During summer, youth attend the affordable six-week day camp. Teens can explore the DJing program.
Seasonal special events are well attended by the community. Summer brings the Summer Dance series. Fall hosts the annual Halloween bash.
Specifically, the playground has poured-in-place rubber surfaces. It includes benches, drinking fountains, and bathroom access. A water feature adds to the fun. Picnic tables are available in the mostly enclosed play area. The playground equipment features toddler swings and adaptive swings. There are also belt seat swings. Children can enjoy a steering wheel panel. Braille and clock panels are installed. Steppers, monkey bars, and hanging rings provide more activity. There are flat single beam side loop monkey bars. Slides include double straight and double curved options. A conical climber is present. A single pole water mister or sprayer offers cooling. A cascade climber completes the playground.
