“Psst. Heard about the Potters Bar Community Hospital?” It’s not just bricks and mortar. It is a story of community, care, and constant evolution.

Potters Bar Community Hospital stands on Barnet Road. It replaced the old Potters Bar and District Hospital in Mutton Lane in 1995. For over two decades, the hospital has been a vital part of this community.

Originally, it had 45 beds. The hospital was managed by the Barnet Healthcare NHS Trust back then. In 2000, the Hertsmere Primary Care Trust took over.

Let’s rewind to 2002. The Minor Injuries Unit got a new name. It became the Alan Bevan Unit. This honored Dr. Bevan. He played a key role in rebuilding the hospital.

Fast forward to 2005. The hospital received a boost of £1.2 million. This came from the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Strategic Health Authority. The money helped to create a new Diagnostic and Treatment Centre. It was the first of its kind in Hertfordshire. The hospital expanded its services. It offered minor surgery and dermatological clinics. Endoscopic examinations became available. Blood and urine tests for diabetic patients were also introduced. In October, a new operating theatre opened. It specialized in cataract surgery. Staff from Moorfields Eye Hospital were seconded here.

But challenges arose by the end of 2005. The Primary Care Trust faced financial difficulties. There was a £4.9m overspend. Nine beds were temporarily closed to save money. A recruitment freeze was put in place. This affected non-clinical roles. Staff cuts were also considered. The PCT even moved its head office to cheaper premises.

By July 2006, the PCT’s deficit had ballooned. It reached £12.4m. A decision was made to close 15 beds. The Elms Clinic in the High Street was also set to close. Its services would move to the Potters Bar Community Hospital. The empty ward space would become offices. Community and district nursing staff would use them. Despite local opposition, the ward closed after a 30-day consultation.

Change continued. Hertsmere PCT didn’t last. In October 2006, the West Hertfordshire Primary Care Trust took over the hospital.

More changes occurred later. In 2009, the West Hertfordshire PCT and the East & North Hertfordshire PCT decided to merge. In April 2010, they became the Hertfordshire Primary Care Trust, now known as NHS Hertfordshire. The hospital then became part of the Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust.

Today, Potters Bar Community Hospital continues to serve. It provides rehabilitation to patients. These patients are over 18 and need support after a medical episode. Rehabilitation staff help patients create care plans. They set rehabilitation goals. The aim is to discharge patients to a safe place. Senior doctors are available from Monday to Friday. A consultant visits weekly. Out of hours medical cover is provided by 111.

So, next time you pass Potters Bar Community Hospital, remember its story. It’s a story of a community. It is a story of a commitment to providing essential healthcare services.
