What if the Honolulu Control Facility could talk? It would tell tales of countless takeoffs and landings. It would share stories of skilled controllers guiding planes safely through the skies.

Welcome to the Honolulu Control Facility. It is more than just a building. It is the nerve center of air traffic for the Hawaiian Islands. This facility includes the Honolulu International Airport control tower. It also houses the Honolulu Center Radar Approach Control or CERAP. CERAP is a combined TRACON-area control center. It covers the vast Pacific Ocean surrounding Hawaii.

The Honolulu Control Facility is vital for ensuring air safety. It handles many aircraft operations. In 2024 alone it managed 469937 aircraft operations. This makes it the 2nd least busy ARTCC in the United States.

Inside this complex is an air traffic control operations room. It has 17 radar control positions. There is also a service operations center for the Pacific. An electronic equipment room supports the technology. Mechanical and electrical areas maintain the environment. Administrative offices and warehouses are included. An employee cafeteria keeps the staff going. More than 200 FAA staff work at the Honolulu Control Facility. They manage the complex airspace around Hawaii.

The FAA dedicated this facility in January 2002. However the history of air traffic control here goes back much further. Honolulu International Airport itself has a rich past. The airport handled 18.8 million passengers in 2008. It saw 286593 aircraft movements.

Modernization programs have continually updated the airport. A new airfield electric vault was completed in 2009. It included advanced lighting control systems. The flight information display system was also upgraded.

Honolulu International Airport boasts impressive infrastructure. It has four paved runways. There are also two offshore runways. The Reef runway opened in 1977. It was the world’s first offshore runway.

The Honolulu Control Facility plays a crucial role in these operations. It ensures smooth and safe air traffic flow. This modern facility replaced an older air traffic control tower. The new FAA Air Traffic Control Tower was dedicated in June 1984. It offered better visibility of runways and taxiways. This made the airport safer for all aircraft.

So as you stand here consider the dedication of the people inside. Think about the technology they use. Remember the countless journeys they oversee. The Honolulu Control Facility is a silent guardian. It ensures safe travels for everyone flying to and from these beautiful islands.
