The 99th Infantry Division. A name whispered with reverence among military historians. Right here before us stands a testament to their incredible bravery. This was not just any division. It was a unique group forged in the fires of World War II.

The 99th Infantry Division a relatively new unit by 1944 had a surprisingly short but intensely impactful history. Activated in 1942 they quickly found themselves thrust into the heart of the Battle of the Bulge. Many were fresh from the Army Specialized Training Program. Inexperienced but determined they were flung into a desperate fight against overwhelming odds.

Outnumbered they held their ground. Their tenacity shocked the enemy. The Germans underestimated the 99th’s resilience. They suffered staggering casualties but the 99th refused to yield. John S D Eisenhower a renowned historian described their defense as the most decisive action of the entire Ardennes campaign.

The 99th’s exploits are legendary. Consider the intelligence and reconnaissance platoon of the 394th Infantry Regiment. They stood at Lanzerath. Just eighteen men. They faced hundreds of German paratroopers. For nearly twenty hours these young soldiers held the line. Their actions significantly hampered the German offensive. Though initially overlooked their bravery was finally recognized decades later with a Presidential Unit Citation. Every member received a medal for their valor.

The 99th continued to fight. They crossed the Rhine at Remagen. They were the first complete division to accomplish this monumental feat. Later they liberated concentration camp subcamps near Mühldorf. They found thousands of Jews suffering terribly from starvation and disease.

Their sacrifices were immense. Over 6500 men suffered casualties. Nearly a thousand died in action. But their contributions to the Allied victory are unforgettable.

The 99th Infantry Division. More than a name. It’s a symbol of courage resilience and unwavering determination. A legacy etched forever in the annals of military history.
