“A school where every brushstroke sings and every note dances,” a student once whispered about Avni Akyol Güzel Sanatlar ve Spor Lisesi. Here, nestled in Istanbul’s Kadıköy district on Rıdvanpaşa Sokak, stands Turkey’s first fine arts high school. Avni Akyol Güzel Sanatlar ve Spor Lisesi opened its doors on October 16, 1989. The school was established by the then Minister of National Education, Avni Akyol himself. It was a pivotal moment, marking the beginning of specialized arts education in Turkey. Avni Akyol Güzel Sanatlar ve Spor Lisesi became the blueprint for similar institutions across the country. Imagine young artists, their hearts brimming with passion, stepping through these doors for the first time. The school’s founding was a collaborative effort, spearheaded by Akyol but brought to life by a team of dedicated individuals. Among them were prominent figures like Prof. Dr. Erol Eti, Prof. Dr. Mustafa Aslıer, and Prof. Dr. Mürşide İçmeli. The grand opening ceremony was a memorable event. Avni Akyol invited the renowned Turkish composer Ahmet Adnan Saygun to cut the ribbon. Overwhelmed with emotion, Saygun declared, “I could die from excitement. But I won’t, because I want to serve the young talents who will graduate from this school.” Initially, Avni Akyol Güzel Sanatlar ve Spor Lisesi welcomed 96 students, divided into two classes each for music and art. Later, in 1990, the former dormitory of Erenköy Kız Lisesi was repurposed as the school’s new building, providing more space for burgeoning creativity. Today, the school offers a rich curriculum in music and art. Students can specialize in Classical European Music or Turkish Music. They can explore their talents in various instruments like piano, violin, viola, cello, double bass, guitar, clarinet, flute, trumpet, kanun, and ud. Aspiring visual artists can hone their skills in drawing, two-dimensional and three-dimensional art, graphic design, and art history. Avni Akyol Güzel Sanatlar ve Spor Lisesi boasts a broad faculty of specialized teachers. Interestingly, Şebnem Paker, who achieved third place in the Eurovision Song Contest, is among the esteemed educators. The legacy of Avni Akyol, both the man and the school, continues to resonate in the Turkish art scene. From its humble beginnings, Avni Akyol Güzel Sanatlar ve Spor Lisesi has become a cradle of artistic talent. It nurtures the dreams of countless young artists, shaping the future of Turkish art and music.
