Established in 1888, Oakfield Preparatory School stands before us. This school has a rich history in Dulwich. Oakfield has educated children from all walks of life. They come from far-flung corners of the globe.
Oakfield Academy was founded in 1887. It was originally situated in the villa. This villa now houses the Year 4-6 children. The Academy existed for the education of the daughters of local gentlemen.
Thurlow Grange was also known as “The House of Thurlow Park Road”. It was a school for Young Ladies. Thurlow Grange was situated on the corner of Croxted Road and Thurlow Park Road. This is where the main Reception is now. It had impressive pillars and eagles. Large gates stood on the corner.
Many outhouses were at the rear of the property. Old Dulwich High School is now Rosemead. It was built as an Inn. But it was never used as such. It became Dulwich High School in the late 19th century. It remained as such until 1939.
During World War II pupils were evacuated. This was because of the threat of bombing. The school building itself was used as a furniture store. It also served as an ARP Warden’s depot.
In the post-war era, it was sold to the Old Vic. It was used as a theatre school. Famous actors like Olivier, Gielgud, and Richardson were all taught there. Later, it was brought back under the auspices of Oakfield. It became the secondary school of Oakfield. It was known as John Wycliffe School.
