Picture this a small settlement nestled on a long mudflat island. This is Coltongo one of Azcapotzalco’s nearly lost original settlements. Its name Coltongo whispers tales of devotion to Coltzin a deity deeply connected to the Matlatzinca people of Toluca. Some believe the name reflects a bend in the ancient Calzada de Coltongo a causeway still visible today.

Coltongo’s story intertwines with the history of Azcapotzalco. It was once a sacred place for the Tepanec people fierce rivals of the Mexica. The main chapel dedicated to Jesus the Nazarene reflects a syncretic blend of faiths. The bowed figure of the scourged Christ is thought to resemble Coltzin the Matlatzinca deity.

The church itself bears witness to time. Parts of its structure date back to the 18th century. Adobe and tepetate compacted volcanic earth formed some of its exterior walls and vaulting. Much of the church is newer however. The original elements offer a glimpse into the past.

A ten-minute walk from the Coltongo Metrobús station on Line 3 brings you to this hidden gem. Its crooked town center a testament to its long history. Coltongo whispers stories of ancient faiths. The church stands as a silent observer. It has witnessed the passage of centuries. Coltongo remains a poignant reminder of Azcapotzalco’s rich heritage. It is a place where history and faith blend harmoniously. A place waiting to be discovered.
