In 1990, Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso planted a seed of peace in the fertile ground of San Francisco. This seed blossomed into KMC SF, the first Kadampa center in the United States. Originally named the California Buddhist Institute, KMC SF began its journey in San Jose. The aroma of tea accompanied the first teachings, held at Tony’s Tea House. The center relocated to San Francisco in the early 1990s, becoming the Saraha Buddhist Center in 1991. KMC SF has seen many transformations. In 1996, Venerable Geshela bestowed the Green Tara empowerment, a pivotal moment in the center’s history. The tranquil setting of Hidden Villa hosted the first retreat in 1992, led by Gen Losang. KMC SF found its permanent home in 2004 at 3324 17th Street in the Mission District. The name changed again in 2012, solidifying its identity as Kadampa Meditation Center San Francisco. KMC SF has offered a sanctuary of peace and hope to the Bay Area for over 30 years. It continues to flourish, hosting events, classes, and retreats. KMC SF remains a testament to the enduring power of meditation and Buddhist teachings.
