Sagrado Corazon de Maria

Hidden within the heart of Mexico City, the Sagrado Corazon de Maria whispers tales of resilience and devotion. The Basilica of St. Jose and Nuestra Senora del Sagrado Corazon, also known as Sagrado Corazon de Maria, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of faith. This church, originally founded by Fray Pedro de Gante in the 16th century, holds a prominent place in Mexican history, predating even the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. It’s said that the first Confirmations in Mexico were held within these very walls. The Sagrado Corazon de Maria houses a treasured image, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. This image, originally from Issoudun, France, is known as the “Protector of Difficult and Desperate Cases.” While Our Lady of Guadalupe holds the highest reverence in Mexico, the image within the Sagrado Corazon de Maria is the third most revered, following closely behind Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Its presence has been a source of miracles and comfort since its arrival in 1854. The image of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, initially placed humbly near the entrance, quickly became a focal point of devotion, even overshadowing the church’s namesake, St. Joseph. The Sagrado Corazon de Maria, along with its sacred image, faced a severe test in 1985. A devastating earthquake ravaged Mexico City, leaving the church in ruins. Many believed it would never reopen. Yet, fueled by their faith and devotion to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, the parishioners rallied. Their generosity and determination led to the church’s reconstruction in record time, completing the new, classically styled Sagrado Corazon de Maria in 1992. In recognition of the church’s historical significance and the deep devotion it inspired, Pope St. John Paul II elevated it to the status of a Minor Basilica in 1993. He acknowledged the “gracious image of the Mother of God” venerated within the Sagrado Corazon de Maria, an image now found in countless churches across Mexico. Today, the Sagrado Corazon de Maria stands as a symbol of hope and restoration, a testament to the power of faith and the enduring spirit of the Mexican people.
