In 1798, a beacon of faith arose on Stockwell Green. It was known as the Stockwell Green New Chapel. The Stockwell Green United Reformed Church, as we know it today, has a rich history woven into the fabric of this London neighborhood. The original chapel, built in 1798, served the Congregationalists. It wasn’t until 1801 that they welcomed their first pastor, Thomas Jackson. A significant turning point came in 1816 when the Hackney Theological Seminary acquired the property. The chapel underwent a transformation in 1850, becoming the Stockwell Green Congregational Church under the leadership of David Thomas. The church was more than just a place of worship. It played a vital role in the community, offering charitable services like the Stockwell Institute. This institute housed day schools, a lecture hall, Sunday schools, a benevolent society, and even a coal club. The Stockwell Green United Reformed Church remained a Congregational Church for many years. In 1972, it joined the United Reformed Church. This marked another chapter in its long history. The building itself was sold in 1987 to the Khatme Mubuwaat Islamic organization. The congregation then embarked on a temporary relocation to St. Andrew’s Church. Finally, they found their permanent home at 60-68 Stockwell Road in 1991. Although the congregation has moved, the original building on Stockwell Green still stands. It serves as a reminder of the church’s enduring legacy in the community.
