Gereja Pentakosta Haleluya Indonesia is part of the larger Pentecostal movement. This movement began in Indonesia around 1910. Early leaders mailed “Spade Regen” to the Dutch Indies. This bulletin influenced Dutch descendants in Central Java. An ecumenical prayer meeting with Pentecostal elements started in 1911. Key figures included H.E. Horstman, Weirs, and Van Abkoude.
In 1920 believers in Java asked for Pentecostal missionaries. Johannes G. Thiessen responded to this call. Williem Bernard, Marie H Blekkink and Mina Hansen also answered. Thiessen returned to Java in 1921. Bernard, Blekkink, and Hansen arrived in August 1922.
Thiessen had worked as a Mennonite missionary in Sumatra. During a break he experienced “Pentecostal blessings” in Switzerland. He founded the Dutch Pentecostal Missionary Society. Later he returned to the Dutch East-Indies as a Pentecostal missionary.
Thiessen’s work centered in Bandung. He rented a law court for Pentecostal meetings. Healings and miracles attracted many people. Sister Kuillenberg donated property in Litsonlaan. A church named “Bethel” was founded. It became the first Gereja Gerakan Pentakosta. Thiessen and his sons then spread Pentecostalism in West Java.
Bernard, Blekking, and Hansen settled in Temanggung. They worked with H.E. Horstman. In 1924 they founded De Pinkstergemeente in Nederlandsch-Indie. Bernard and Blekking also edited “De Pinksterbode”. Illness forced them to leave Java in 1925. Mina Hansen continued the work and married F.A. Abell.
