Established in 1950 the Institut Sains dan Teknologi Nasional ISTN stands as Indonesia’s oldest private science and technology university. This remarkable institution began as the Akademi Teknik Nasional ATN. ATN offered a Bachelor of Engineering BE degree focusing on Civil Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. The institution’s founding aimed to bolster Indonesia’s post-independence engineering expertise. It sought to replace Dutch engineers who had returned home.
Initially located on Jalan Cikini Raya ATN thrived. It provided high-quality education catering even to working professionals. Evening and night classes allowed employees to pursue further education without interrupting their careers. Many successful alumni attribute their careers to ISTN.
The university’s evolution was marked by significant milestones. In 1965 ATN expanded to include a Bachelor’s degree program. The name changed to Akademi Teknik Nasional/Sekolah Tinggi Teknik Nasional ATN/STTN reflecting this growth. The transition was smooth given the four-year Sarjana Muda program and the six-year Sarjana program.
Further growth led to a name change to Sekolah Tinggi Teknik Nasional STTN in 1980. The student body swelled to over 5000 requiring a larger campus. The move to a new 12-hectare campus in Jalan Moh Kahfi II Srengseng Sawah Jagakarsa in 1983 signified a new era.
The final transformation to Institut Sains dan Teknologi Nasional ISTN happened in 1985. This reflected an expansion of programs and faculties. ISTN now boasts three undergraduate faculties a D3 program and a Magister program covering areas like Civil Engineering Architecture and various technology fields.
