A hushed reverence hangs in the air. We stand before the Hôtel Lutetia Plaque a stark reminder of a poignant chapter in Parisian history. This isn’t just a plaque. It’s a living testament to resilience hope and the enduring spirit of humanity.

The Hôtel Lutetia a luxury hotel in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Près has a story far richer than its Art Nouveau façade. Built in 1910 by Marguerite Boucicaut owner of the nearby Bon Marché department store it was designed to accommodate her discerning clientele. The hotel’s name a nod to Lutetia the ancient Roman name for Paris is etched into its very being. Its Art Nouveau style with sculptures by Léon Binet and Paul Belmondo embodies elegance. The building’s proximity to the Assemblée Nationale and the Sénat made it a favorite among parliamentarians and colonial officials.

The hotel’s gilded age however was quickly overshadowed by the dark clouds of World War II. In 1940 the German army occupied Paris. The Hôtel Lutetia became the headquarters of the Abwehr the German military intelligence service. Its luxurious rooms were transformed into offices for Nazi officials. Even then the spirit of the Lutetia wasn’t completely crushed. Hotel employees secretly hid precious grand cru wines in the cellar saving them from the occupiers.

But the story doesn’t end there. Upon liberation in 1944 General de Gaulle ordered the Hôtel Lutetia to be used as a center for those returning from Nazi concentration camps. Thousands of survivors found solace within its walls. Sabine Zlatin known as the “Dame d’Izieu” played a crucial role in establishing this refuge. Families reunited. Hope was rekindled.

This plaque a simple yet powerful symbol serves as a reminder of that time. It commemorates the Hôtel Lutetia’s transformation into a haven of hope a place of reunion after the unspeakable horrors of the war. It’s a silent witness to the suffering and the resilience of the human spirit. Even today the memory of this pivotal moment is preserved. A group of former deportees would gather at the brasserie for lunch every month until recently.

So as we stand here let us remember not only the grandeur and elegance of the Hôtel Lutetia but also its remarkable role during a time of profound darkness. This plaque is a tribute to the victims a celebration of survival and a powerful reminder of the importance of compassion and remembrance. The Hôtel Lutetia’s story is etched not just in stone but in the very soul of this city.
