Seven thousand souls call Écouen home. A charming town nestled 20 kilometers north of Paris. But Écouen’s story is far grander than its current population suggests. It’s a tale woven through centuries of French history. A history imprinted on its stones. Visible in its architecture.

For centuries Écouen was a quiet village. Then came the Montmorencys. This powerful family made Écouen their home. They built a magnificent castle. A symbol of the French Renaissance. Anne de Montmorency the Constable of France transformed a simple castle into a breathtaking Renaissance palace. He employed the greatest artists of his time. The castle became a jewel of French architecture. François I and Henri II visited. Henri II even issued a harsh edict from Écouen condemning Lutherans to death. The castle became Henri II’s favorite retreat. After Anne’s death the Montmorency family line eventually died out. The Écouen estate passed through other hands. The Condés owned it next. They made changes. An entire wing was destroyed and replaced with a lower structure. This was done to enhance views of the Plain of France. Amazingly parts of this wing were later discovered during excavations.

The Écouen church Saint-Acceul is another important landmark. It dates back to the 16th century. It stands just below the castle. Its stained-glass windows survived wars and revolutions. They remain remarkably well preserved. It is the only church in France to bear this name. The church too shows the influence of the Montmorencys. Anne de Montmorency paid for the construction of the choir. The ten stained-glass windows showcase his mark. The church was enlarged in 1737.

The French Revolution saw the confiscation of Écouen’s castle. Much of its furnishings were lost. However the castle itself survived relatively intact. In 1793 Écouen played a crucial role. It was the site of the first successful experiment in optical telegraphy. A message was sent 25 kilometers between Ménilmontant in Paris and Saint-Martin-du-Tertre. Écouen’s hilltop location made it an ideal relay point. This experiment proved crucial. It led to the construction of the first telegraph line connecting Paris and Lille.

The 19th century saw Écouen’s transformation. A colony of painters arrived. They were drawn to the town’s unique landscape. Artists from across Europe came to Écouen. They built houses with large windows for their studios. Many of these houses still stand. Several streets are named after these artists. The impact on Écouen was significant. The artists contributed to a distinct artistic style the Écouen School.

Following the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 a fort was built. This differs from the château. The fort is a polygonal defensive structure. Originally designed to house over 300 men and 22 artillery pieces. Only parts of it remain today. The Château d’Écouen’s history is long and rich. From the powerful Montmorencys to a school for the daughters of Legion of Honor members to the current National Museum of the Renaissance. Écouen’s history continues to unfold.
