Is it possible for a rugby player to become a legend? Here at the Yves du Manoir Sculpture we celebrate one such man. He was more than just an athlete. Yves du Manoir was an embodiment of French sporting ideals.

Yves du Manoir was born in 1904. He excelled in many sports including tennis and swimming. However it was rugby where he truly shined. He joined Racing Club de France in Paris. This showcased his versatile talent. He was known as an excellent tackler and kicker. Yves du Manoir typically played as a fly-half.

At only 20 years old Yves du Manoir earned his first cap for France. This was against Ireland in 1925. Despite France losing the match 9-3 his performance captivated the crowd. They chanted his name throughout the game. Yves du Manoir was named man of the match. He went on to win seven more caps. In 1927 he captained the team against Scotland.

Yves du Manoir was not only a sportsman but also a scholar. He enrolled at the prestigious École polytechnique. In 1925 he graduated as an air force second lieutenant.

Tragedy struck in 1928. Yves du Manoir declined an invitation to play against Scotland. He had an exam to qualify as a military pilot. Sadly his plane crashed shortly after takeoff. It is believed a wheel got caught in a tree.

The news of Yves du Manoir’s death shocked the nation. His close friend Georges Gerald vice-captain of France broke down in tears when delivering a speech.

Yves du Manoir’s legacy lived on. Racing Club de France renamed their stadium in his memory just months after his death. This is where France played most of their home games until 1973. The Yves du Manoir Sculpture stands here at the stadium entrance. It honors his memory.

In 1932 the Racing Club de France created the Challenge Yves du Manoir. This competition celebrated the spirit of open play. It was a fitting tribute to Yves du Manoir’s style.
