Baunatal. Ever heard of it? This town in the district of Kassel. It is younger than you might think. Baunatal came to be from several smaller places joining together.
In 1966, Altenbauna, Altenritte, and others became one. These included Großenritte, Guntershausen, Hertingshausen, Kirchbauna and Rengershausen. Imagine how different each village was before they united.
Baunatal sits south of Kassel. It lies west of the Fulda river valley. To the west and northwest is the Habichtswald. The Baunsberg rises there. The Bauna river runs through Baunatal. It flows into the Fulda near Guntershausen. This river gives the town its name.
Baunatal’s story is tied to industry. In 1957, Volkswagenwerk Kassel was built. It was on the old Henschel & Son site in Altenbauna. By 1960, over 6,000 people worked there. This made the town grow fast.
On January 1, 1964, Altenbauna, Altenritte, and Kirchbauna joined. This was the first step in creating Baunatal. Then, on July 1, 1966, Großenritte joined. Baunatal officially became a town. Horst Werner became the first mayor. Back then, 11,705 people lived here. The Volkswagen factory employed about 13,400. Baunatal kept growing. Hertingshausen joined in 1971. Guntershausen and Rengershausen followed in 1972. By then, Baunatal had about 19,300 residents.

Baunatal is known for its Volkswagen factory. It is the second largest VW factory. The plant makes parts for other factories. It does not build complete cars.
