Adrienne Maire. A name whispered on the wind here on Rue Adrienne Maire in Montreuil. This street, a testament to a woman of unwavering conviction, a life interwoven with the struggles and triumphs of 20th-century France. Rue Adrienne Maire isn’t just a street. It’s a story etched in stone and pavement.

Born Adrienne Paris in 1909, her early life was marked by hardship. She left school at twelve to work in a knitting factory in Montreuil-sous-Bois. This was her reality until 1935. The year 1929 brought marriage, and 1932, a pivotal moment. Adrienne and her husband, René Maire, joined the Communist Party, inspired by a meeting led by Daniel Renoult. When the Communist Party took control of Montreuil’s municipality in 1935, Adrienne’s life took a turn. She began working at the town hall, conducting surveys amongst the unemployed.

During the tense period of the “Phony War,” she served as a liaison agent for Jean Chaumeil. This role led to her arrest in June 1940. She managed to escape during the exodus. Returning to her clandestine activities, this time for Jean Baillet, she faced arrest again in November 1941. This time, she was imprisoned in Rennes with her newborn child, only gaining her freedom in November 1942.

After the war, Adrienne Maire’s dedication continued. From 1944 to 1947, she served as a stenographer for Jacques Duclos’ parliamentary secretary. Her commitment to public service propelled her to become a municipal councilor and deputy mayor of Montreuil in 1947. She also participated in the Communist National Congress in Strasbourg and served on the Seine Federal Committee. Her political career spanned decades, remaining a municipal councilor until 1977 and a general councilor until 1976. Rue Adrienne Maire stands as a tribute to her resilience, her fight for her beliefs, and her unwavering service to her community. Here in Montreuil, her legacy continues to inspire.
