Did you know that Pinner Wood School’s history stretches back to the 1800s? Pinner Wood School wasn’t always located in its current Latimer Gardens home. It began as part of the Pinner National School on the High Street. It later moved to School Lane off Marsh Road.
The school we see today opened in early September 1939. That’s right in the midst of the Second World War. The children of Pinner Wood School didn’t let the war disrupt their education. They combined learning with “digging for victory”. The school field became a large vegetable patch. The students even participated in a BBC broadcast for American radio. They talked about their wartime contributions. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the resilience and resourcefulness of the time.
Pinner Wood School’s history is full of transformations. School uniforms were introduced in 1958 although not all students adopted them immediately. In 1972-73 the school split into two separate entities. Pinner Wood First School and Pinner Wood Middle School operated under different headteachers and governing bodies. An additional practical area was added to the Middle School. Ten years ago these two schools merged again. Pinner Wood School entered the 21st century as an “outstanding school” receiving this accolade in 2010/11 and again in 2011/12.
Even a major setback couldn’t break the spirit of Pinner Wood School. In March 2017 partially collapsed chalk mines were discovered below the school. This led to a forced evacuation. However the strong community spirit of “Pinner Wood Forever” prevailed. Children parents governors and staff maintained the school’s ethos. They continued their commitment to “Learning Together”. The mines were filled and the school returned in January 2018.
Pinner Wood School celebrated its 80th anniversary in June 2019. Pupils participated in a two-week project. They investigated what Pinner Wood was like for past pupils. The celebration included an orchestra performance a choir and a surprise visit from former pupil Michael Rosen. The students created a mural which remains a prominent feature of the school. Pinner Wood School continues to thrive. It’s a testament to the dedication of its community and its rich and ever-evolving history. It’s a school that has faced challenges head-on yet has flourished. It’s a truly remarkable institution.
