North Lucerne Avenue a quiet residential street in Chicago’s North Center neighborhood. It’s easy to miss. But this unassuming avenue holds a fascinating history. Imagine the area in the mid-1800s. Sparsely settled prairie and farmland stretched for miles. Early settlers German Swedish Irish and English immigrants built small truck farming communities. North Center including North Lucerne Avenue was part of America’s greatest celery-growing region. Truck farming was the economic lifeblood until the 1890s. Believe it or not greenhouse technology was pioneered right here in North Center.

After the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 many displaced Chicagoans sought refuge in this area. A massive rebuilding effort began. The need for non-wood housing was high. Nearby riverbanks provided clay. Soon clay pits and brickyards dotted the North Branch. This area became nationally famous as a center for brick making. It earned the nickname Bricktown. By the 1900s some of those clay pits in the southern part of the neighborhood closed. There was opposition to their noxious odor. Light-manufacturing firms started to appear on Ravenswood Avenue. This was from Montrose to Diversey.

North Lucerne Avenue itself remained largely residential. Imagine the quiet streets lined with modest homes. Families lived and worked their lives amid this developing industrial area. Think about the sounds of children playing. Perhaps you can hear the clatter of a nearby factory. These are the quiet details of life. These details make North Lucerne Avenue so unique.

In 1934 Lane Technical High School was built over former clay pits. It began as an all-boys vocational school. It later became co-educational in 1971. Now Lane Tech College Prep High School it’s considered one of Chicago’s top high schools. The school’s location on the site of former clay pits is a little-known fact. It is a testament to the area’s transformation. North Lucerne Avenue quietly observed these changes. The quiet avenue remained a residential haven.

Today North Lucerne Avenue continues its peaceful existence. It is a small part of North Center. This area demonstrates the dynamic history of Chicago. It shows how this small avenue has evolved from farmland to a thriving residential community. North Lucerne Avenue is a quiet reminder of the growth and change of Chicago. It is a unique story. A story waiting to be discovered.
