Initially conceived as a salt and soda ash extraction plant El Caracol Oriente’s story is one of ambition and adaptation. Imagine this vast spiral-shaped basin in 1944. It was a revolutionary idea a solar evaporation pond designed to harness the sun’s power to extract minerals from the ancient lakebed of Texcoco. Water flowed in a clockwise spiral gradually evaporating counterclockwise. The goal was 100 tons of salts per day. However the process proved far more expensive than anticipated. The unexpected high costs of refining the alkaline brines led to the project’s initial failure.
Undeterred SOSA Texcoco the corporation behind El Caracol Oriente saw a new opportunity. In 1967 they discovered the potential of the blue-green algae naturally occurring in Lake Texcoco’s alkaline waters. This algae Spirulina became the unexpected star of El Caracol Oriente. It was processed into a nutritious supplement. The company proudly branded it Spirulina Mexicana. This resurrected an ancient Aztec practice. The Aztecs had also collected and traded this edible algae from Lake Texcoco.
El Caracol Oriente became the world’s first commercial Spirulina production facility. Production scaled up to an impressive 200 tons per day. Salt production all but ceased as cultivating spirulina proved far more lucrative. However the unique snail shape of the basin hampered efficient aquaculture. Much of the harvesting remained manual labor. This proved to be a critical disadvantage.
As the demand for spirulina exploded international competitors emerged. Companies like Earthrise Nutritionals and Cyanotech invested in automated systems. They outpaced El Caracol Oriente’s manual processes. Spirulina Mexicana lost its market share. It faced the same fate as the earlier salt operation. The spirulina venture ultimately became unprofitable.
Internal conflicts during Mexico’s turbulent political climate worsened the situation. Labor disputes and the company’s eventual bankruptcy in 1986 sealed El Caracol Oriente’s fate as a spirulina producer. The facility changed hands multiple times. Eventually the Mexican government took over the site. Today El Caracol Oriente serves a vital purpose as a water reservoir for Mexico City. It especially plays a critical role during the dry season. It also plays a part in a larger water treatment initiative. This modern use transforms El Caracol Oriente once again reflecting its capacity for adaptation and ongoing significance to the city.
