Here stand the walls of Lansing Gospel Chapel. Its story is interwoven with the threads of faith, community, and a desire for spiritual connection. Lansing Gospel Chapel is not just a building. It is a testament to the enduring power of shared beliefs.

In 1957 four families dreamt of a place of worship. The Gilbert, Hurley, Leathem, and Murray families started prayer meetings. They met in their homes near the Indiana state line. Their vision? To establish a gospel chapel in Lansing.

With support from Stewards Foundation, their dream took shape. Lansing Gospel Chapel was built on Bernice and Roy Streets. It became a beacon of hope in the community. Though small, the assembly thrived. It witnessed souls finding salvation and spiritual growth.

Lansing Gospel Chapel is a non-denominational church. This means it is autonomous and not formally aligned with an established denomination. Such churches still adhere to the Bible’s teachings and practices.

The history of churches in the Chicago area is rich and diverse. Tent meetings and conferences played a vital role in establishing early assemblies. Donald Ross, a Scotsman, was a driving force behind these gatherings. In 1879, he held tent meetings in the Union Park neighborhood. He also published his newsletter The Barley Cake.

K.J. Muir sought like-minded Christians when he arrived in Chicago in 1880. He participated in tent meetings led by Donald Ross and C.J. Baker. These meetings led to the formation of an assembly.

Other assemblies also played their own role in Chicago’s religious history. The Norwood Gospel Chapel began in 1916. A group of Christians sought help from the Moody Bible Institute. They desired a place of worship different from their denominational affiliations.

Union Ridge Gospel Chapel began as a Sunday School outreach. Charles Clohsey and Stanley Modrzejeswki of Norwood Gospel Chapel led the effort. By 1957, it had become an established assembly.

These stories highlight the spirit of community and faith that drove the establishment of churches in the Chicago area. Lansing Gospel Chapel is part of this larger narrative.
