Picture this You stand before the Clarence S Hec Edmundson Pavilion a legendary Seattle landmark. Its Tudor Gothic architecture speaks of a bygone era. Gargoyles watch from the Montlake Boulevard side. A checkerboard pattern adorns the building echoing the design on Husky championship banners.

This isn’t just any building. It’s Hec Ed a place steeped in history. Originally called the Washington Men’s Physical Education Building it opened in 1927. Students raised a significant portion of the construction cost a testament to their dedication. It was hailed as the Madison Square Garden of the West the largest arena west of the Mississippi.

The pavilion has witnessed a rich tapestry of events. Basketball games of course. U S presidents have graced its presence. Even billionaire computer moguls have walked these halls. Boy Scouts have marched through its doors. It’s a true melting pot of experiences.

In 1948 the name changed to honor Clarence Hec Edmundson. This man Uncle Hec to his players dedicated his life to the Huskies. He coached basketball and track for years. His influence shaped generations of athletes. His legacy lives on in the very name of this building.

The passage of Title IX transformed Hec Ed. Suddenly it hosted far more teams than originally designed. The original dirt floors were covered with scarred wooden boards. Pole-vaulters javelin throwers and football players all shared the space. Spectator seating shrunk. It was a chaotic but vibrant blend of sports.

Later renovations doubled as a theatrical venue. Simon and Garfunkel played there in 1968. But seismic concerns sparked further necessary renovations. After a 19-month project Hec Ed reopened in 2000. Bank of America held naming rights for the arena within. Team practices moved to the Dempsey Indoor Practice Facility. It became a higher-caliber event center.

Today the men’s basketball team calls it the Dawg Pound. They celebrated their 800th win inside this pavilion more than any other NCAA men’s team. It remains a cool place to play. A place with stories in every corner. A place where history and excitement converge. This is the Clarence S Hec Edmundson Pavilion. A Seattle institution.
