“A tapestry of whispers,” our guide began, gesturing towards Banjar Basangkasa Desa Adat Kerobokan. “That’s how I’d describe the history of this place.” Banjar Basangkasa Desa Adat Kerobokan isn’t etched in stone inscriptions or ancient scrolls. Its story is woven through generations, passed down in hushed tones around family fires. Originally, this area was part of a village south of here, known as Pidanmasana. A formidable leader named Dewa Bagus Manik Macuet ruled over its 40 families with an iron fist. His reign, however, was short-lived. He succumbed to an incurable illness, leaving a power vacuum that plunged Pidanmasana into chaos. Amidst the strife and dwindling population, a group decided to seek refuge elsewhere. They ventured north, establishing a new settlement. This new haven offered peace and security, eventually drawing all the remaining villagers. They christened their new home “Kerobokan,” a name derived from the Balinese term “saling kerobok,” meaning “mutual destruction” or “fighting amongst themselves.” This name served as a stark reminder of the conflict that birthed their community. Banjar Basangkasa Desa Adat Kerobokan, located within the broader Kerobokan area, holds a unique position. It exists as part of Desa Adat Kerobokan, one of the two traditional villages that make up modern Kerobokan. The community here actively participates in age-old traditions. One such tradition, “nyekar,” sees families gather at the coast, offering prayers and releasing symbolic offerings into the sea. This ritual is a poignant expression of gratitude and a plea for continued harmony. It’s a tangible link to the past, a testament to the resilience and enduring spirit of Banjar Basangkasa Desa Adat Kerobokan. So, as you stand here, imagine the echoes of generations past, whispering tales of struggle, resilience, and the enduring power of community.
