The name Kőérberek has an interesting origin. It comes from the Kő-ér. The Kő-ér was a stream in the shallow valley. It was later named Hosszúréti-patak. This small stream gave the area its distinctive identity.
Kőérberek’s boundaries are well-defined. They stretch from Repülőtéri Road to the border of Budapest. It includes Kőérberki Road Kétvölgyi Street and Balatoni Road. The Hosszúréti-patak also marks a boundary along with the border between the 11th and 22nd districts.
In 2001 Kőérberek had a population of just 282 residents. Despite its small size Kőérberek plays a significant role in Újbuda. Újbuda is the most populous district of Budapest.
Between 2002 and 2007 a new housing development called Tóváros was constructed here. These modern apartment buildings are situated on the northern side of the Hosszúréti-patak. In 2005 a man-made lake called Kána-tó was created by damming the stream.
Újbuda itself has a rich history. Until 1950 it was known as Szentimreváros. It officially became Újbuda in 2005. The district’s population grew rapidly from the late 19th century. In 1930 a decree was issued to create a new district. Local authorities began their work in 1934. In 1950 Albertfalva and Kelenvölgy were annexed to Újbuda. This helped Újbuda reach its current size.
Újbuda serves as a western gateway to the capital. It connects to the 9th district via four Danube bridges. The district covers 33.49 square kilometers. This makes it the eighth-largest district in Budapest.
