The soaring brick structure of the Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, its natural stained-wood ceilings gleaming in the afternoon light, has a history deeply rooted in Dallas’s love field area. Founded in 1942, the parish started as a wing of Holy Trinity Church. It served the growing community until a new church was built. The parish’s rich history is woven into its walls and stained-glass windows, whispering stories of families, faith, and perseverance.
The first church, a far cry from the one you see today, was located at 7617 Cortland. Father S. E. Bryne, its first pastor, guided the nascent parish through its early years. The parish hall, built in 1946, doubled as the parish school until the current school was completed in 1950, a testament to the community’s dedication. Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, with their convent built in 1947, were instrumental in nurturing young minds.
The parish’s journey took a turn in February 1954 when St. Monica Parish was formed. Bishop Danglmayr, a pivotal figure in the separation, became its pastor. Father Clair E. McTamney took the reins at Our Mother of Perpetual Help, followed by Father Lawrence M. DeFalco.
Tragedy struck in January 1963, when a fire engulfed and destroyed the church. Father Fred Mosman, who had just assumed the role of pastor, immediately began planning for the new structure. However, he was assigned as the first pastor of St. Patrick Parish before construction started. The current church, a symbol of resilience, was dedicated in April 1964.
The interior of the church boasts a magnificent mosaic mural, showcasing Our Lady of Perpetual Help and her divine Son in heaven. Behind the altar, the mural, designed and executed by Joaquin Medrano, is a replica of the original picture displayed in the Church of St. Alphonsus in Rome. The mural is a captivating testament to the artistic legacy of the church.
Take a minute to bask in the sanctuary’s ethereal glow. Feel the warmth of the church, the echoes of countless prayers, and the sense of faith pulsating through its very walls. It is a place where generations have sought solace, celebrated joys, and faced life’s challenges. It is a haven of peace and a beacon of hope, a testament to the enduring power of faith.
