The church stands tall on Lewisham High Street, a beacon of faith amidst the bustle of the city. St Saviour, St John the Baptist and St John the Evangelist Catholic Church is more than just a place of worship; it’s a testament to the resilience of the Catholic community in Lewisham.

The church’s origins are humble. During the late 1800s, Catholics in the area lacked a dedicated place of worship. A French resident kindly offered her home on Morley Road for Mass, with the first service held on 27 May 1894. However, as the community grew, the need for a permanent church became apparent. After a brief stint in a school hall, a former manor called The Limes was acquired on the High Street, where a chapel and school were built in 1898.

The current, more magnificent church was built a decade later, in 1909. Patrick James Foley, a local businessman and founder of the Pearl Assurance Company, generously funded the construction. The church boasts an impressive Italianate style, with an interior adorned with colourful marble. The building features a towering campanile, a prominent landmark on the Lewisham skyline, which was added in the late 1920s.

Over the decades, the church grew. New chapels were added, including one dedicated to St Patrick, another to St Joseph, and a Sacred Heart Chapel. All these additions reflected the Catholic community’s enduring spirit and its unwavering devotion. The church has continued to serve its community, a sanctuary where people find comfort, solace, and spiritual guidance.

Today, St Saviour, St John the Baptist and St John the Evangelist Catholic Church remains a vibrant hub of activity. It hosts multiple Masses each week and welcomes people from all walks of life into its imposing, majestic structure. The church is a reminder of the unwavering faith of the community, built upon the foundation of countless individuals who sought a sacred space for their spiritual journey.
