“What if we built a clubhouse for geeks?” That thought sparked the creation of HackerspaceSG. It is Singapore’s first co-working space. Today we stand before a unique community hub.
HackerspaceSG is more than just a space. It is a testament to Singapore’s DIY spirit. Luther Goh Lu Feng, Wong Meng Weng, Chua Ruiwen, and Justin Lee founded it in 2009. They envisioned a place where hackers could gather. They wanted to exchange ideas and create cool applications.
Wong Meng Weng described it as a combination of living room, science lab, and shared office. It was meant for the geek community. Initially, it was just a gathering spot. But it soon evolved into a co-working space. This catered mainly to tech startups.
HackerspaceSG has moved several times over the years. It started at 70A Bussorah Street. Then it moved to 344B King George’s Avenue. In November 2021, it relocated within King George’s Building. Its current address is in Textile Centre since December 2024.
This space is not just for software projects. HackerspaceSG hosts technology classes. It also hosts events about biology, computer hardware, and manufacturing. All types of hackers are welcome here.
HackerspaceSG is a not-for-profit organization. Members volunteer for many chores. They also organize activities. Decisions are made at monthly plenums. Most decisions are made by consensus. A board handles administration and filings.
The organization has open membership. Anyone can become a member. HackerspaceSG is financed through membership dues. It is open to sponsorships for expansions. It also welcomes sponsorships for renovations.
HackerspaceSG operates as a communal space. Tools, desks, and even food are shared. Anything left in the space is free for anyone to use. Few restrictions exist. Members should not detract from others’ experiences. They also should not consume resources without replacing them. Any member can host an event.
HackerspaceSG wants to improve its infrastructure. They aim to install better lighting. Also they want to paint the walls white. This will make the space better for events. They also aim to revise membership prices down. The goal is to allow more people to use the space. This also helps keep the community active.
