A weathered plaque whispers tales of faith and community. It stands before New Hope First Baptist Church and Cemetery. Let’s journey back to 1868, to the humble beginnings of New Hope First Baptist Church. Picture the scene: the Block House community, pioneers James and Elizabeth Trammell opening their home to a small gathering. Six souls united by faith, they officially chartered the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church of Christ on October 22nd. The Reverend Thomas F. Bacon, their chosen leader, guided their spiritual journey. Just a year later, the earth embraced its first resident, Martha Elizabeth Inman, wife of deacon S. C. Inman. Her resting place became the heart of New Hope Cemetery. Many other early settlers and church leaders rest here as well. Their headstones stand as silent witnesses to the church’s enduring legacy. New Hope First Baptist Church wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a pillar of the Cedar Park community for over a century. From 1871 to 1919, the church building served double duty. It was also the local public school, nurturing young minds alongside spirits. Influential figures shaped the church’s history. Missionary J. E. Hamilton, who tragically died of yellow fever in Brazil, once graced its pulpit. Reverend D. E. Simpson, instrumental in establishing the Texas Baptist Children’s Home, was both baptized and ordained within these walls. New Hope First Baptist Church continues to thrive today. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith, community, and education.
