Once named Voie AN/17, Rue des Tapisseries whispers tales of transformation. This street began as part of the ZAC Saussure development. Today, it is a pedestrian way featuring a courtyard and a fountain.

Rue des Tapisseries in the 17th arrondissement is not just a street. It is a place with a story rooted in a nearby locality.

Imagine this street bustling with workers. Picture them heading to their homes in Paris Habitat after a long day. The street, though modern, carries echoes of the past. Its name hints at a connection to the artistry of tapestry making.

The name Rue des Tapisseries evokes images of skilled artisans. They work meticulously at their looms. The Gobelins tapestry factory supplied the court of French monarchs. Louis XIV collected over 2,650 pieces.

Jean Gobelin, a Flemish dyer, established his workshop in the 15th century. He settled along the Bièvre River. His specialty was creating vibrant scarlet dyes.

The Gobelins family became synonymous with Parisian prestige. Many pursued careers in religion or finance. Others upheld the family tradition of tapestry making.

In 1662, Jean-Baptiste Colbert acquired the Gobelins. He laid the foundation for the Royal Manufacture of Furniture of the Crown. The factory hired talented artisans. They created magnificent tapestries.

Despite the French Revolution, the factory survived. Tapestries bearing the royal emblem were destroyed.

The Manufacture des Gobelins expanded. It acquired the Manufacture de la Savonnerie de Lodève in 1825. Chemist Chevreul discovered methods to stabilize dyes.

In 1870, it was renamed Manufacture Nationale des Gobelins. The Manufacture de Beauvais was integrated in 1989. A dyeing and weaving school was established. The school preserved the legacy of tapestry art.

Today, the Manufacture des Gobelins, creates tapestries. These tapestries are inspired by artists like Chagall, Picasso, and Matisse. The commitment to quality remains unwavering.

The Mobilier National furnishes official buildings. These include the Élysée Palace and embassies. It houses over 200,000 pieces of furniture and art.

The Enclos des Gobelins marks the original factory compound. Much of it is designated as listed property.

The Rue des Tapisseries ends at 131 Rue de Saussure. This street encapsulates Parisian history.
