Originally built in 1901 it was known as Tiong Hoa Hue Kwan. This school was a haven for well-to-do Chinese families in Batavia. Its architecture was initially distinctly Mandarin. The walls the gates the floors all reflected the elegance of Chinese homes. Only wealthy Chinese children attended. No indigenous children were enrolled.

However in 1944 the building underwent a significant transformation. The Mandarin style was completely demolished. It was replaced with a Dutch colonial design. The other two are the Gandaria Cinema and the Department of Maritime Affairs.
