Did you know that Leões translates to lions in Portuguese? It is fitting then that we delve into a story of a different kind of lion. I want to tell you about Rafael Leão. He is a Portuguese footballer who embodies the spirit of Lisbon.

Leão was born in Almada near Lisbon. His paternal surname means lion in Portuguese. This young talent began his journey in Sporting CP’s youth system. At just nine years old, his skills were evident.

In 2017, Leão made his senior debut with Sporting CP B. He scored in a 1–1 draw against Braga B. Soon after, he debuted in the Primeira Liga. This was under manager Jorge Jesus. He replaced Bryan Ruiz in a match against Feirense.

Leão quickly became known for his speed and dribbling. These skills made him a versatile player. He could play as a centre-forward or on the wing. His time at Sporting CP, however, was marred by an unfortunate event. In May 2018, a mob attacked players and staff. This led to Leão terminating his contract.

In August 2018, Leão joined Lille in France. He signed a five-year deal. He scored eight goals in 26 games. He shared teams with fellow Portuguese players. They finished as runners-up in the 2018–19 Ligue 1 season.

AC Milan came calling in August 2019. They signed Leão for €35 million. He debuted in Serie A that same month. His first goal for the club came against Fiorentina. In 2020, the Court of Arbitration for Sport ordered Leão to pay €16.5 million to Sporting CP. This was for breaching his contract.

Leão’s career with AC Milan blossomed. In December 2020, he scored the fastest goal in Serie A history. It took just six seconds against Sassuolo. At the start of the 2021–22 season, Leão continued to shine. He scored and assisted in multiple games.

His contributions helped AC Milan win their first Serie A title in eleven years. Leão was named Serie A’s Most Valuable Player for the 2021–22 season. He became known as one of the best dribblers in Europe.

In the 2022–23 season, Leão extended his contract with AC Milan until 2028. His performances earned him nominations and awards. These included Serie A Goal of the Month.

Leão’s international career is also impressive. He has represented Portugal at various youth levels. He debuted for the senior team in October 2021. He scored his first international goal at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He was part of Portugal’s squad at UEFA Euro 2024.

Known for his versatility, Leão is a dynamic forward. Stefano Pioli, his manager at Milan, often used him as a supporting striker or winger. His pace and ability to exploit space make him a constant threat.

Off the pitch, Leão is also a rapper. He releases music under the name WAY 45. He is fluent in Portuguese, English, Italian, and French. In 2024, he wrote an autobiography titled Smile.

Rafael Leão’s journey from Almada to international stardom is a testament to his talent and resilience. Like the lion his name suggests, he embodies strength. He also embodies skill and the vibrant spirit of Lisbon.
