Lost amidst Rio de Janeiro’s Tijuca National Park lies Pico Itaiaci. It’s a place where nature’s grandeur intertwines with echoes of the past. Tijuca National Park offers an urban hiking experience. It feels a world away from the metropolis. Within this lush park lies Pico da Tijuca. It is the city’s highest point at 1021 meters.

Tijuca isn’t your typical forest. It was first protected in 1861. This was a decade before the United States established its first national park. Tijuca is a remarkable 40-square-kilometer area. It is part of the Atlantic rainforest. This rainforest once stretched across 1 million square kilometers of the Brazilian coastline. Centuries of European colonization took a heavy toll. Vast swathes of forest were cleared. They were cleared for sugarcane and coffee plantations. Timber was harvested by loggers. Today, a mere 15% of this original expanse remains.

In Rio de Janeiro, the loss of the Atlantic Forest had a devastating impact. Rivers that sustained the young settlement dried up. This threatened the city with drought. In the 19th century, Emperor Peter II spearheaded a bold initiative. He wanted to bring back the forest. He relocated farmers and city dwellers. They were living on what was once forested land. He assigned a workforce to lay the foundation for Tijuca National Park.

This reforestation came at a terrible human cost. Enslaved Africans were forced to plant over 100000 trees. The reforestation effort was a success. It’s important to acknowledge the dark chapter in history that facilitated it. Six enslaved individuals replanted all those trees. Their names were Eleutério Constantino Manuel Mateus Leopoldo and Maria. Let’s remember their names.

The return of the forest wasn’t a complete restoration of the ecosystem. Many animal species are still absent from Tijuca today. These animals once thrived in the original Atlantic Forest. Despite this, a hike to Pico Itaiaci offers a glimpse into human intervention in environmental recovery.

Before reaching the summit, you’ll have to conquer a series of steep stairs. These stairs are carved directly into the mountainside. These stairs serve as a gateway to Tijuca rainforest’s breathtaking viewpoint. There are exactly 117 stairs. They are equipped with a sturdy iron handrail. It helps with the climb. Despite its length and inclination, the trail is well-maintained. It provides a safe path to the summit.

Having conquered the stairs, you’ll be greeted with a panoramic vista of Rio de Janeiro. It encompasses iconic landmarks. These landmarks are Christ the Redeemer Sugarloaf Mountain and the Maracanã Stadium. The Tijuca Forest sprawls beneath you. It offers a glimpse into the heart of this urban oasis. Pico Itaiaci offers more than just a view. It is a testament to resilience. It shows the enduring power of nature.
