Here stands the majestic Erzsébet Statue a bronze monument to Empress Elisabeth of Austria. Its location at the foot of Gellért Hill on the Buda side is fitting. The Empress loved Hungary. She often visited her palace in Gödöllő. She even learned Hungarian earning the love of her Magyar subjects. They affectionately called her Sissi.

This statue wasn’t always here. It was first unveiled in 1932. It stood then in Pest’s Március 15 Square. It was housed within a circular domed building. This was removed in 1953. The statue itself was moved to its current spot in 1985. This was after a period of storage during the communist regime. The statue’s journey reflects the changing fortunes of its subject. Empress Elisabeth’s popularity endured despite political upheaval.

The Empress’s life was tragically cut short. She was assassinated in Geneva in 1898. Her death shocked Hungary and sparked widespread grief. The statue stands as a lasting tribute. It commemorates her affection for Hungary and the Hungarian people’s love for her.

The statue’s creation was a long and complex process. A competition was held in 1900 to select its sculptor. It took nearly two decades to choose a winner. György Zala was selected as the sculptor. Rezső Hikisch designed the initial domed structure.

The Erzsébet Statue stands as a powerful symbol. It represents a complicated history. It is a testament to a beloved empress. It is also a reminder of the resilience of Hungarian culture and identity. It continues to inspire awe and reflection in those who visit this historic site.
