Fort de Montlignon a significant part of Paris’s northern defenses was built between 1874 and 1878. It’s one of a group of forts designed to protect vital routes leading to the capital. Constructed primarily from the local meulière stone it stands as a testament to 19th-century military engineering.

The story of Fort de Montlignon isn’t just about its defensive purpose. A fascinating anecdote involves a young Captain Joffre. He was in charge of the fort’s construction. One day while enjoying a solitary lunch a surprising visitor arrived. Marshal MacMahon the President of the Republic himself came to inspect the work. Joffre proudly showed off his creation even attempting to take the President to the top of a makeshift observation post. Colonel Broye thankfully intervened preventing the President from undertaking such strenuous activity. MacMahon’s repeated visits highlight his deep interest in military matters.

Today Fort de Montlignon isn’t used for defense. Instead it serves a different purpose. It’s now the National Shooting Center. Police officers receive ongoing training here. Elite units such as the RAID and GIGN also utilize its facilities. A rather unexpected resident is the decommissioned guillotine a silent reminder of a bygone era of justice.
