In 1904 Dr Alejandro M Albert founded the Escuela de Farmacia del Liceo de Manila. This was the first pharmacy school run by Filipinos. It was a bold step a true pioneer effort. The school initially occupied a building later used as a theater. Its success led to expansion. More students meant more space.
By 1910 Atty Filemon D Tanchoco joined as a teacher and administrator. This marked a pivotal moment. His partnership with Purificacion Gallego-Tanchoco would shape the university’s destiny. They believed education was the key to overcoming poverty. Their dedication fueled the institution’s growth.
Through the years the school evolved. It became the Manila College of Pharmacy. Then the Manila College of Pharmacy and Dentistry. The Second World War devastated the campus. Buildings were reduced to shells. Equipment was looted. But the spirit of MCU lived on.
After the war the Tanchocos and their team rebuilt. The institution was reborn as Manila Central Colleges. A college of medicine followed. Then the college of nursing. A graduate school opened too. In 1948 Manila Central Colleges gained university status. It became Manila Central University. A 10 hectare campus in Caloocan was inaugurated in 1949. This was a massive undertaking. It showcased their ambition and vision.
The university continued to grow. Colleges of optometry and midwifery were added. High school and kindergarten levels followed. The Industrial Pharmacy and Research Laboratory was a source of pride. It was unique in the Far East. Even the American Journal of Pharmacy featured it.
Today Manila Central University stands as a monument to its founders. Their passion for education continues to inspire generations of Centralinos.
