Imagine a melody that stretches across the entire Île-de-France. That’s the mission of the Orchestre national d’Île-de-France. Created in 1974 this symphony orchestra brings music to the region. Marcel Landowski founded it to succeed a previous orchestra.
The Orchestre national d’Île-de-France is based in Alfortville. It is supported by the regional council and the Ministry of Culture. Uniquely the Orchestre national d’Île-de-France aims to share four centuries of symphonic music. It especially focuses on reaching new audiences across the region.
With ninety-five permanent musicians the Orchestre national d’Île-de-France performs around one hundred concerts each season. Franciliens enjoy a wide variety of programs. These range from the grand symphonic repertoire to contemporary music. The orchestra explores baroque music and modern sounds.
For about fifteen years the Orchestre national d’Île-de-France has premiered roughly one hundred contemporary pieces. In 2013 it launched a composition competition. It became the Prix Élan in 2021. This was in collaboration with the Institut de recherche et coordination acoustique/musique.
The Orchestre national d’Île-de-France’s cultural outreach develops ambitious educational activities. These include workshops artist meetups educational concerts and musical shows. These actions aim to foster an appreciation for symphonic music. The orchestra also promotes encounters with musicians. It seeks the discovery of live performance. Several individuals have guided the Orchestre national d’Île-de-France. Jean Fournet was a music director. Jacques Mercier held roles as chef associé and directeur musical. Yoel Levi served as chef principal. Enrique Mazzola was directeur musical and chef principal. Since 2019 Case Scaglione has been the directeur musical and chef principal.
The Orchestre national d’Île-de-France also has a history of general directors. Bernard Blumstein was administrateur général. Philippe Fanjas held the same position. Marc-Olivier Dupin was directeur général. Roland David served as directeur. Fabienne Voisin was directrice générale. Since 2023 Pierre Brouchoud has been the directeur général.
Since 2017 the Orchestre national d’Île-de-France has held a competition for assistant conductors. This helps young conductors professionally. Léo Margue was a winner. So were Jonas Ehrler Lucie Leguay Brian Liao and Georg Köhler.
From 2013 to 2021 the orchestra organized the Île-de-créations competition. This was in partnership with Radio France and other organizations. It allowed young composers to test their skills with a symphony orchestra. Winners included Christina Athinodorou Adrien Trybucki and Camille Pépin.
The Orchestre national d’Île-de-France maintains a dynamic approach to audiovisual projects. It has a large recording studio near Paris. It recorded soundtracks for films like Minuscule 2 and Le Voyage du prince. It also worked on the video game Greedfall.
