Founded in 1882 the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Gymnasium stands before you. A venerable institution its history is woven into the fabric of Bonn. Initially known as the Higher Citizen School it served a specific purpose. It aimed to equip middle-class children with a broad general education. This was to prepare them for technical commercial and trade professions. The school’s initial concept however did not achieve the expected success. After three years it was reclassified as a Realprogymnasium incorporating Latin from the fifth grade. This change proved remarkably successful. By 1891 including the preparatory school it boasted 339 students. This led to the construction of a new three-story building in Doetschstrasse in 1887. This was later expanded. Additional classrooms a gymnasium and an auditorium were added between 1897 and 1899. The Second World War tragically brought destruction. The school closed in 1944 and subsequently burned to the ground on October 18 1944. The current building represents a significant chapter in Bonn’s post-war history. It was Bonn’s first new secondary school building after the war. Architect Toni Kleefisch designed this three-track gymnasium for boys. Joseph Fassbender contributed to its artistic features. Construction began on June 12 1951. The first 12 classes previously housed in the Remigius school moved into the new wing on November 3 1952. By February 20 1953 the entire school had relocated. The official opening ceremony took place on June 18 1953. Further expansions including a swimming pool sports fields and an auditorium followed until 1969. The school was granted landmark status in 2006 a testament to its architectural significance. This was a recognition of its importance to post-war school architecture. Its open design and versatile layout were deemed exemplary. The Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Gymnasium’s growth led to the creation of two new secondary schools. These were the Friedrich-Ebert-Gymnasium and the Städtisches Gymnasium Tannenbusch. The school’s legacy extends far beyond its impressive buildings. Its commitment to academic excellence is evident in the numerous awards and achievements. Its students consistently excel in national competitions in mathematics and computer science. The school’s rich musical tradition is also noteworthy. Its students have produced three CDs for the “Classical Music for Human Rights” series a project that raises money for charities around the world. This demonstrates its holistic approach that blends academic rigor with community engagement. As you stand before the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Gymnasium you are witnessing more than just a school.
