Craving a view of a different Lisbon? Here at Miradouro das Olaias, you will see a less traditional but equally spectacular side of the city. This isn’t your typical postcard viewpoint. Miradouro das Olaias offers a unique perspective.
The Miradouro das Olaias overlooks the Vale da Montanha Urban Park. It is easily accessible by foot or bicycle. The viewpoint emerged from a vacant lot. It has now been reclassified. It has been transformed into a space for leisure and appreciation.
Imagine this vacant area. The Junta de Freguesia saw its potential. They decided to create a space for everyone to enjoy the magnificent view. The Miradouro das Olaias was born.
Architect Tomàs Taveira designed the space early last year. He is also the author of many buildings in Olaias. The parish council requested his expertise. Works began in mid-summer and finished recently.
Notice the benches inviting you to sit and stay awhile. See the trees growing offering shade and a touch of nature. Did you spot the cat shelter? Even the local feline residents have a home here thanks to Taveira’s project.
The Miradouro das Olaias is located on Rua Manuel dos Santos. It is a testament to the power of local initiatives. The Junta de Freguesia do Areeiro executed this small project. It falls under the delegation of competencies from the Lisbon City Hall to the parish councils.
From Miradouro das Olaias you have a nice view of the trio of urban parks. These are Vale da Montanha, Bela Vista and Casal Vistoso Urban Park. The Casal Vistoso Urban Park is easily accessed on foot or by bicycle. It is right next to the CML social services building. A bike path connects to Avenida de Paris through the Areeiro traffic circle.
It’s worth noting that the Miradouro das Olaias is next to an existing viewpoint in a large meadow. This meadow is now quite green. It offers a similar view and is equally worth a visit. So feel free to explore both and compare the perspectives.
So, what makes Miradouro das Olaias special? It’s not just about the view. It is about the transformation of a forgotten space into a community asset. It is about offering a different lens through which to appreciate Lisbon’s beauty.
As you stand here at Miradouro das Olaias, take a moment to appreciate this different view of Lisbon. Think about the vacant lot that once was and the vibrant space that it is now. It is a testament to the power of community and the beauty of urban renewal.
