In 1838 the name Újpest first appeared in print. This marked the beginning of a fascinating chapter in Budapest’s history. We stand today where Újpest once stood as an independent village.

Újpest initially wasn’t part of Budapest. It was a separate village. For 114 years Újpest flourished independently at Budapest’s northern gate. Count István Károlyi issued the deed of endowment for this independent village in 1840. Its growth was remarkable. By 1870 Újpest had become Hungary’s most populous village boasting 10000 inhabitants. Significant industry fueled this impressive growth.

The story of Újpest is intricately linked to its industrious spirit. Leather wood textile and chemical industries thrived here. The legacy of these industries is still visible. Several notable companies such as Tungsram and Chinoin remain based in Újpest today.

Újpest’s influence extended beyond industry. It nurtured a rich cultural landscape. Celebrated figures like the poet Mihály Babits and writer Margit Kaffka were associated with Újpest. Margit Kaffka even taught here. Poet József Berda lived and worked in Újpest enriching its literary heritage.

Újpest’s architectural landmarks bear witness to its past. The impressive Water Tower and Town Hall stand as testaments to its development as a town. A local history collection a theatre and a gallery further showcase Újpest’s cultural identity.

In 1907 Újpest gained town status Dr Gyula Ugró becoming its first mayor. It later received the title ‘town of county rank’. The town’s journey culminated in its annexation to Budapest on January 1st 1950. This is how Újpest became the fourth district of Budapest the vibrant and historic area we see today. A place where industry culture and history intertwine. A testament to the lasting spirit of Újpest.
