Founded in 1986, Universidad de Montevideo stands as a testament to Uruguay’s commitment to higher education. Right here, we delve into the story of an institution that quickly rose to become a leading university in the nation. The Universidad de Montevideo, or UM as it’s often called, wasn’t always a university.

Initially, it started as the Instituto de Estudios Empresariales de Montevideo in the Uruguayan Stock Exchange building. This was a pioneering move. The institute introduced Master’s Degree Programs in Business Law, International Trade Law, and Economic Administrative Law in Uruguay. This marked the beginning of UM’s journey toward becoming a comprehensive university.

In 1992, the IEEM Business School further expanded its offerings. It launched a Master’s Degree Program in Business Administration. Just three years later, in 1995, UM took another significant step. The university introduced its first undergraduate degree in Business Administration. Today, the Universidad de Montevideo offers a wide array of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. These degrees span across five schools, the IEEM Business School, and the Center for Biomedical Science.

The Universidad de Montevideo officially gained the right to be legally named a university in 1997. Since then, UM has solidified its reputation nationally and internationally. This recognition is based on its rigorous academic programs. It also stems from its renowned faculty, insightful publications, and in-depth research projects.

UM is a private Catholic university. It operates under the Opus Dei Prelature. The university embraces values like a strong work ethic, a spirit of service, and a love for liberty. UM also promotes family values. These principles are promoted within an environment of peace and respect.

The Universidad de Montevideo is deeply committed to sustainability. It has integrated sustainable practices into its campus management. One notable initiative is the relocation of the School of Engineering. The new location is in the area of LATU. This is Uruguay’s first sustainable technological ecosystem. The university actively works to reduce CO2 emissions. It uses efficient, clean energy and optimizes the use of its facilities. UM also promotes the responsible use of resources like water, electricity, and paper.

The UM International Office plays a crucial role in the university’s global engagement. It develops strategies to promote international relations. It also enhances the university’s global profile and competitiveness. The UM has academic agreements with over 140 institutions worldwide. These partnerships facilitate student mobility and research projects.

The Universidad de Montevideo has consistently ranked among the top universities in Uruguay. It has also been recognized internationally. Since 2019, UM has been ranked among the top 500 universities in the world. This is according to the QS World University Rankings.

The story of Universidad de Montevideo is one of continuous growth and commitment to excellence. From its humble beginnings as a business institute to its current status as a leading university, UM has consistently strived to provide high-quality education and contribute to society. Its focus on internationalization and sustainability further underscores its vision for the future.
