Founded in 1884 Roseland Christian School stands as a testament to faith education and community. Originally established for the children of Dutch immigrants its story is one of transformation. The school was a place where the Dutch language and traditions thrived. It was closely tied to the First Christian Reformed Church of Roseland. Imagine a time when two separate schools existed just blocks apart. One on 104th Street the other on 111th Street. They were remarkably close yet distinctly different. Parent-run versus principal-controlled they resisted many attempts at merging. A common thread however was the Dutch language used in instruction.

The transition to English curricula happened gradually in 1910 and 1911. The schools persevered through world wars and the Great Depression eventually uniting in 1947. But the Roseland neighborhood changed. As the Dutch community moved to the suburbs enrollment declined. By 1967 Roseland Christian School faced a crisis just 200 students remained. Principal Marvin Hooker saw an opportunity. He opened the school’s doors to the African-American community. This revitalized the school providing a Christian education for a new generation. The once entirely Dutch-American student body became entirely African-American by the mid-1980s.

The school occupied the 1929 building replacing the older 111th Street campus. It remained a significant part of the Roseland landscape until its closing in June 2013. A rich history of Christian education concluded after 130 years. Its legacy however continues through the Kwame Nkrumah Academy. A new chapter for the building a new chapter for the community. But Roseland Christian School’s impact remains. The school’s commitment to faith education and service continues to inspire. It reminds us of the power of community and adaptation. A story of perseverance against the tide of change. A lasting imprint on the Roseland community and the lives it touched.
