Picture this. You’re standing before Stanley Bay School. Its history whispers from the very stones. This isn’t just a school. It’s a living testament to a community’s dedication. Stanley Bay School opened its doors on February 15 1909. Ninety-eight pupils filled its classrooms then. By July of that year the student population soared to 200. The school started small. Two classrooms and a porch. It cost 754 pounds to build. The first headmistress Miss M Barr was just 20 years old. She later married becoming Mrs Garvey. Growth demanded expansion. New buildings arose in 1911. More classrooms and a staff room were added in 1916. The school then expanded its year levels to include Year 1 to Year 8 students. Years later under the leadership of George Wilson Stanley Bay School purchased two sections on Glen Road using them as playing fields.
The school’s story continues. More land acquisitions occurred in the 1960s and 1980s. Houses were removed to create larger playing fields. A swimming pool was installed in the 1980s. Swimming lessons were held at Stanley Bay Beach earlier. Two new classrooms rooms 10 and 11 were added in 1996. The intermediate school system changed the school’s makeup. It no longer included years 7 and 8.
