Hidden within Beirut’s Achrafieh district lies the Butshay Cemetery, also known as the Beth Elamen Jewish Cemetery. This isn’t just any cemetery. It’s a poignant echo of Lebanon’s rich and diverse past. Butshay Cemetery was established in 1829 with the burial of Rabbi Moïse Yedid Levy. Over the next two centuries, it became the final resting place for over 3,000 Lebanese Jews, their stories etched into the very stones that mark their graves. Imagine this place during the Lebanese Civil War. The cemetery was situated right on the Green Line, the dividing line between East and West Beirut. Butshay Cemetery became a strategic point, controlled by the Phalanges of the Lebanese Front. They even used landmines within the cemetery grounds, a grim reminder of the conflict that engulfed the city. While rockets and shells caused damage, the cemetery itself remarkably escaped desecration, a testament to a certain respect, even amidst the chaos of war. After the war, the Lebanese Armed Forces de-mined Butshay Cemetery, ensuring its continued existence as a place of memory and reflection. Today, the Butshay Cemetery stands as a silent witness to Lebanon’s history, a place where the stories of a community are preserved, despite the passage of time and the turmoil of war.
