The Parachute Riflemen Brigade the Paracaidista wasn’t always based in Mexico City. Its story begins in 1946. Then Secretary of Defense General Francisco L Urquizo and Director of Aeronautics General Gustavo Salinas Camiña had a vision. They wanted Mexico’s first paratrooper unit. A group of officers and soldiers trained at Fort Benning Georgia. By July 1946 Captain Albarrán López led the first graduating class. Lieutenant Jorge Munguía González commanded the second class later that year.
Initially based at Balbuena Military Camp the unit made its first jump over Mexico on September 15 1946. Soon after the Paracaidista moved to Puebla. In 1947 it became the Airtrooper Company and returned to Mexico City’s Military Camp No 1. The Paracaidista Brigade as we know it formed in 1969. It included three battalions and a special forces group added in 1998.
Today the Paracaidista is based at Santa Lucia Air Force Base. It boasts a headquarters company three parachute rifle battalions a special missions unit a logistics company and a training center. The Brigade’s special missions unit works closely with other elite SEDENA units. Their role mirrors that of the US 75th Ranger Regiment or the British SFSG. They provide vital support during combat operations.
